Inspiring the Next Generation of Green Engineers
The built environment accounted for 40% of the UK’s carbon footprint, with 80% of the housing stock projected for 2050 already constructed. This project engaged Year 5 pupils in Salford and Blackburn with the principles of sustainable development and green engineering, placing a strong emphasis on retrofitting and eco-friendly construction methods.

Your Miniature Greenhouse
Your Miniature Greenhouse introduced Year 5 pupils to sustainable development and green engineering through hands-on learning. Engineering ambassadors worked with pupils to explore decarbonisation, emission-reduction technologies, and energy efficiency. Pupils designed and built miniature eco-homes incorporating retrofitting techniques, renewable energy sources, and biodiversity preservation.
Greener Houses for the Future
Running alongside Your Miniature Greenhouse, the Greener Houses for the Future project also focused on engaging Year 5 pupils in Salford with the decarbonisation of the construction sector. This sister initiative introduced children to novel green building materials and sustainable design practices, encouraging them to think critically about the environmental impact of housing.
Friends of Energy House 2.0
Through hands-on activities and interactive learning, pupils explored how innovative materials and construction techniques can influence positive change. The project culminated in a guided tour of Energy House 2.0, where pupils saw real-world applications of green technologies and gained insight into the future of sustainable housing.
