Professor in Biochemical Engineering
Prof. Chenyu Du is a Professor in Biochemical Engineering in the School of Applied Sciences at the University of Huddersfield. His research focuses on developing bioconversion processes to transform sustainable biomass into value-added products, including biochemicals, biofuels, and biopolymers. Overall, he has secured total research funding of £18.5 M with £3.2 M as PI from UKRI, industry, overseas funds etc. He has supervised 20 PhD students, published >80 peer reviewed papers, 1 book and 10 book chapters (h-index 40). Prof. Du is one of the pioneers working on textile waste recycling. He has received nearly £3M funds working on the valorisation of textile waste into value added products. He currently leads an EPSRC and BBSRC jointly funded project “Textile waste refinery for the production of recycled plastic, cellulose and dye” (£1.75 M).
His current research is focused on:
- Textile waste recycling, plastic recycling
 - Sustainable biomaterials for the medical and textile applications
 - Natural derived bio compounds for medical and fine chemical applications
 - Bioconversion of waste material for value-added products
